Sculpture Pavilion
ARCH 101
Fall 2019
Sited at the Menil Campus in Houston, this sunken sculpture pavilion
is meant to encourage individual experiences and different ways of wandering as one becomes immersed underground. The geometries
of the plan are derived from the plan of Robert Venturi’s 1959
Beach House, characterized by the 45° angled conditions and
freestanding walls. There is no single entry point, but rather multiple entrances that lead to a montage of spaces occurring one after the other. Visitors may find themselves facing a diagonal, a plane, or a narrow niche. In addition to having a variety of exhibition spaces, monumental elements are used as landmarks to orient visitors toward collective gathering spaces which emphasize movement and exploration throughout the site.
