Empowering Future YMCA Changemakers
Design For America - National Project
2021-2022
Design for America, a student and youth-led organization with chapters at over 50 universities using the design process to make social impact, partnered with YMCA USA to explore how to empower youth to become confident and impactful changemakers in their communities. Many young people hold the allyship, advocacy and passion for change in their communities, but don’t know how to turn that into action and sustainable change. The challenge for the 2021-22 DFA national project was to advance changemaking efforts for students and youth to do meaningful, community-driven work through the design process.
After over 20 interviews with YMCA youth and staff and co-creating a solution with dozens of stakeholders for a year, our team at DFA Rice produced a youth-centered program that encourages youth to become more active contributors to changemaking in the long term.
